Success story: SCHWENK Zement GmbH & Co. KG

XAMS brings SAP authorizations to a new level

The customer project carried out by Xiting at Schwenk Zement GmbH & Co. KG, in partnership with Scomtech, focused on building a cross-site role and authorization concept with the help of Xiting Authorizations Management Suite. After the analysis and optimization of the authorizations and roles used, these could be restructured in a workplace-oriented manner and are now ready for a S/4HANA migration. The use of the XAMS enabled more transparency by identifying and avoiding critical SOD conflicts.

With the Xiting Authorizations Management Suite (XAMS), we were able to take our SAP authorization system to a new level. This tool combined with the experienced Xiting consultants and our own employees has ensured the smooth transition to a workplace-oriented role concept. Finally, we have more transparency regarding our SOD conflicts and have been able to significantly reduce these.

Objectives

The introduction of the XAMS modules for organization and role modeling at Schwenk Zement GmbH & Co. KG was carried out with the main goal of creating a suitable and sustainable role and authorization concept. Based on an analysis of the authorizations used, both these and the roles should be restructured and standardized in a workplace-oriented manner. As a result, the number of roles and potential transaction accesses could be significantly reduced. Furthermore, the cleaning and revision of the SU24 based on active use was a particularly important part of this project. With the help of the Role Replicator module, we managed to increase the effectiveness in the processing of large amounts of data (e.g., role assignments, user systems or SU24 adjustments).

Challenges

As part of the project, the construction of a cross-site role and authorization concept was both a goal and a challenge. The maintenance of the SU24 was essential for sustainable role building. Accordingly, the XAMS Role Designer module enabled the identification of missing authorization values and the SU24 optimization. The reports used could be checked and a corresponding Z-transaction could be provided thanks to the analysis possibilities of the XAMS. During the SAP security check, a further focus was placed on critical authorizations and SoD conflicts of the roles in order to identify and avoid the critical SOD conflicts with the help of the CRAF-Ruleset (Critical Authorization Framework).

Successes

By using the XAMS, the missing authorizations could be analyzed parallel to the ongoing operation without interrupting the business operations or affecting the end users. During the go-live, the backpack principle minimized the potential risks, thanks to the possibility of temporarily using old roles. Thus, the most critical phase of the authorization project could be successfully completed. Effective cooperation during the project implementation resulted in a successful know-how transfer regarding the use of XAMS to the partner Scomtech and to the customer Schwenk. The good communication towards the customer in a partnership-led cooperation between Christoph Lohmann (Scomtech) and Xiting GmbH created an optimal starting point for an upcoming S/4HANA migration at the customer, Schwenk Zement GmbH & Co. KG.
